The Xiaomi Mi A3 is shown to the world as one of the most anticipated smartphones of the year. After the incredible success of the Xiaomi Mi A2, many users were waiting for the arrival of the third Android device of the Chinese company.

We talk about a terminal that arrives at the market to become one of the kings of the mid-range but that has some important obstacles that we did not expect at first.

In general, the new Xiaomi mobile stands out for its camera, design, and software and shows its negative points on a screen with HD + resolution and the inclusion of an on-screen fingerprint reader that, like everyone else, is not prepared to compete with conventional ones.

The Xiaomi Mi A3 is now available at official points of the sale worth 249 euros in its 64 GB edition and 279 euros in the 128 GB version

We have been able to analyze the device with less internal storage and the truth is that it is highly recommended to pay 30 euros more to have more space.

The new mid-range of the Chinese company has already broken into the market and we want to tell you the good and the bad of this terminal, the most common failures and the qualities to take into account so that you can know every one of the details of the new Xiaomi Mi A3.

Attractive design with important changes

The design is one of the aspects that we like most of a Xiaomi Mi A3 that completely changes its aesthetics in relation to the previous editions, but that keeps the lines of the latest mobiles manufactured by Xiaomi.

Distinguishing this terminal from the Mi 9 is complicated on many occasions and it is that the Chinese company has decided to change the metalized surface by a glass housing that gives the device a much more premium look.

Of course, including sections as important as the Android One logo and the new Xiaomi logo in the lower-left corner. Without a doubt, a new brand image that brings a more elegant air to the device.

On this occasion, we have been able to analyze the grayish model with which Xiaomi has sought to integrate a little more elegance and sobriety into the range.

We are talking about a device with a pretty attractive gradient but that has nothing to do with the blue version and its curves or the white model and its color.

Color versions of Xiaomi Mi A3

We had the opportunity to see all the color versions during the official presentation and we were lit by the blue tones. To finish with the rear, we find a triple vertical camera that comes accompanied by the LED flash and that stands out quite a lot from what is the body of the smartphone. Without forgetting the absence of the fingerprint reader that passes to the front.

In general, it is an attractive and slippery mobile that shows the world as a real magnet for fingerprints. Luckily, Xiaomi includes a translucent case with black tones that suits the device quite well.

In the front, Xiaomi has decided to continue betting on the notch in the form of a drop of water and a more than correct use of the side frames.

The Xiaomi Mi A3 indeed has a noticeable button but a little less thick than we have seen in previous editions. In the upper right corner, we find a notification LED that is most useful and also turns on during the terminal charging process.

It should be noted that the glass on both sides has been reinforced by Gorilla Glass 5 so the resistance should be adequate. However, it never tries to buy a good screen protector to avoid dislikes.

As a positive point, the Xiaomi Mi A3 does have a headphone jack input located at the top next to the infrared and the microphone accompanied by the Dual SIM tray on the right edge and the typical power and volume buttons on the right side.

At the bottom, we find the speaker and USB type C input. In general, the Xiaomi Mi A3 shows the world with an attractive design in which all current trends appear and that feels great in the hand because it does not excessively large.

Surely, one of the most successful designs of the company that has very few weaknesses and that comes with logo change included.

The Xiaomi Mi A3 Falls in Resolution (HD +) but Improves in Quality (AMOLED)

After the Xiaomi Mi A1 and Xiaomi Mi A2 arrived on the market with the Full HD + resolution on their screens, Xiaomi arrives and imposes the HD + resolution on the Xiaomi Mi A3.

The truth is that this change is not very well understood first, but the results after use are not as dire as we initially thought.

Analysis of the Xiaomi Mi A3 - the Evolution of the Xiaomi Android One

The integration of AMOLED technology brings a certain quality air to the device, however, the resolution is still poor for a terminal of these characteristics.

The Xiaomi Mi A3 has a 6.09-inch AMOLED panel with HD + resolution (1560 x 720 pixels) and an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9. That is a pixel density of 282 dpi.

A section that stands out negatively and that is noted in everything that has to do with the clarity of images. Even on some occasions, the pixels can be seen on the screen (sawtooth effect).

Undoubtedly, one of the most obvious failures of a device that if it had reached a point of resolution could become one of the untouchables of the market.

But not everything was going to be negative. The integration of AMOLED technology is shown as a superior point in the quality section when it comes to offering more intense blacks and more bright colors.

It also allows you to save battery power when turning off pixels when black shades are used due to the independent lighting of each pixel.

In general, the contrast is correct, although the terminal tends to go towards colder colors and there is no option to calibrate this aspect.

The maximum brightness can reach 350 nits, a little lower than the rest of the average ranges but enough to be able to be seen correctly in conditions with lots of light. The automatic brightness has seemed quite good since it adapts the screen correctly and very quickly.

When it comes to viewing angles, the Xiaomi Mi A3’s screen is inferior to an IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel. The use of the screen also improved compared to previous versions with the integration of the notch in the form of a water drop and almost non-existent lateral margins.

The new Xiaomi terminal does not have modes such as double tap, but it includes the famous ambient screen that allows you to see notifications when the mobile is locked.

Evolution Without Showing Off in Performance

The hardware is perhaps another aspect in which we expected more than a Xiaomi MI A3 that comes with the Snapdragon 665 as a power base accompanied by 4 GB of RAM and 64/128 GB of internal storage.

In this section, it would have been more correct to ascend from the Snapdragon 660 of the Xiaomi Mi A2 to the new Qualcomm 700 series as we have already seen in competing mobiles such as the Realme 3 Pro.

Qualcomm Snapdragon

The Snapdragon 665 is shown to the world as a chip manufactured in 11 nanometers at 2 GHz that slightly increases performance compared to the previous version but greatly improves battery savings. Although in this aspect the AMOLED HD + screen also has a lot to do.

An important change can be seen in the integration of the Adreno 610 GPU that is shown as one of the most appropriate of the mid-range to fully enjoy the heaviest video games. Although much of the blame is also software as fluid and light as Android One that has allowed us to enjoy games like the Asphalt 9 without much trouble.

Although there is one aspect that stands out in the performance section that is the integration of the new UFS (Universal Flash Storage) 2.1 memories.

Perhaps, this is the section that does not allow to define the Xiaomi Mi A3 as a bad smartphone in terms of hardware. These new ultra-fast memories greatly improve the fluidity of the device in almost every aspect and make the Xiaomi Mi A3 a smartphone superior to many of its competitors.

In general, the Xiaomi Mi A3 is defined as a device that we expected one more point in the performance section that saves furniture thanks to the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) and UFS 2.1 memories but that comes with a low evolution at the processor level Are you going to have fluency problems? Do not.

Android One is Always a Success

Another of the sections that we highlighted in the first impressions and for which it is recommended to acquire this type of devices lies in the integration of Android One as the basis of the operating system.

Xiaomi Android One

We are talking about software that will ensure at least two updates over the years and that has a very good frequency of security updates. This is the purest version of Android with which Xiaomi leaves aside MIUI (something that is appreciated) to end up integrating the best user experience that Google’s operating system can grant.

The fluidity we referred to in the performance section has a lot to do with the integration of Android One and not a layer as heavy as MIUI.

In this way, the purest operating system with fewer rectifications offers a fluidity that even exceeds that of the mobile with the best processor in the competition.

That is why a Qualcomm 700 series chipset would not have felt this device bad. Of course, in this case, the Chinese company has decided to add some pre-installed applications that are not usually common in these types of devices.

My Community, Xiaomi Store, and Amazon are the three preinstalled apps that we could find in the terminal.

On-screen Fingerprint Reader and Remarkable Sound

Xiaomi has decided to leave the back clean to end up integrating the fingerprint reader under the front panel. Undoubtedly, a very noticeable change that becomes a sample of the trend of this type of optical readers today, something that began in the high range and is already reaching the intermediate sector of the market.

On-screen Fingerprint Reader

Of course, where there is a conventional fingerprint sensor that all modern are removed. As expected, the on-screen fingerprint sensor of the Xiaomi Mi A3 is one of the slowest we have been able to analyze, although, at least, it doesn’t need so many touches to unlock the terminal.

We speak of a security element as slow as it is effective since it takes at least half a second to identify the fingerprint.

In addition, the animation does not help much to convey a sense of speed so we hope it can be improved in conjunction with software updates.

In the sound section, the Xiaomi Mi A3 has pleasantly surprised us, especially with maximum power. The new Chinese terminal reaches quite high volume levels, although they should take a little more care of the distortion as the power rises.

It should be noted that it only integrates a single speaker, although there are two slits in the lower part of the terminal.

Of course, another positive point is shown with the incorporation of the headphone jack connector on the top of the device.

The maintenance of this aspect is unfortunately shown as a novelty in the new terminals of the market.

Versatile Camera with Better Results Than Expected

The photographic system is framed as another of the strengths of a terminal that reaches the market with a 48MP main sensor with f/1.8 aperture accompanied by an 8 MP wide-angle with f/2.2 aperture and a 2 MP depth sensor with opening f/2.4.

Triple vertical camera comes accompanied by the LED flash

The integration of the triple camera has reached the mid-range of Xiaomi with a device that exceeds the initial expectations if we look at its initial price (249 euros).

In general, the camera performance of the Xiaomi MI A3 is quite acceptable. While it is important to note that you need to incorporate a much-needed change when making our photographs: deactivate filter beauty.

Chinese mobiles often include this type of effects due to clouds and all they do is take a photograph worse that can be captured in the best way with HDR mode.

In the contrast section, we find a suitable calibration where the vivid tones are shown as they are and where there is not much air of artificiality.

Without forgetting a wide dynamic range that improves substantially with respect to the Xiaomi Mi A2 cameras.

It should be noted that, by default, photographs are taken in 12 megapixels. That is when the Xiaomi Mi A3 begins to use the so-called Pixel Binning technology that is able to combine four pixels into one with the aim of maximizing the image.

This shows a significant reduction of noise in low light conditions and an improvement in the sharpness of the photograph. Of course, it is possible to activate a superior mode that is capable of taking photographs in 48 megapixels.

As regards the complementary sensors we find an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera that seems to have been established as one of the most common trends of all brands today.

In this way, you can obtain some photographs that cover a greater extent. Specifically, this sensor covers a total of 118 degrees and it does not work very well when there are few light conditions.

Of course, these images can look a little more deformed in the corners. The third 2 MP sensor is used to measure depth and improve the use of portrait mode.

Night mode is another highlight of the camera application. From Xiaomi they have decided to integrate functionality that is shown as another of the mandatory aspects in the current mobiles.

The results, in this section, are more than correct, much more than we would expect in a mid-range mobile. It is clear that it does not reach the level of terminals such as the P30 Pro or the Pixel 3, but it solves the ballot in a large part of situations.

The terminal is obliged to increase ISO values to try to counteract a noise that has not been completely eliminated.

On the other hand, the level of detail is quite prominent, but it would well need a stabilizer to this photographic system to improve in some points when capturing the photographs with greater clarity. You can also see a certain air of artificiality that does not reach excessive levels.

The front camera is shown to the world with a 32-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture that delights lovers of selfies.

It also has a field of vision of 79 degrees and is capable of detecting up to a total of 12 scenes thanks to artificial intelligence.

It should be noted that beauty mode is always active, so it is recommended to take a look at the settings to make the configuration that each user likes best.

In the video section, The Xiaomi Mi A3 can record at 30 or 60 fps in either 4K or 1080p resolution, a system that lacks optical stabilization to complete an excellent configuration.

An Impressive Evolution in the Battery

If we have to highlight a point of the Xiaomi Mi A3 next to the operating system and the cameras, that is the battery. Few are the brands that integrate an evolution of more than 1,000 mAh from one model to another, and we have to take into account that the Xiaomi Mi A2 had a total of 3,010 mAh, while the Xiaomi Mi A3 is shown to the world with 4,030 mAh capacity.

4,030 mAh capacity.

Autonomy will not be missing in a device that also reaches the market as one of the mobiles that best takes advantage of autonomy thanks to its screen and its operating system.

As we have added previously, the HD + screen is one of the weakest points of the new Xiaomi terminal. However, not everything was going to be negative.

The integration of AMOLED technology together with a lower resolution can save energy that any other mobile could not maintain. Without forgetting the incorporation of Android One as a base, an operating system that always optimizes the phones in the best possible way.

Nor should we forget the choice of Snapdragon 665 as a power base, since they go from 14 nm to 11 nm. We talk about a smaller manufacturing process that improves performance, lowers temperature and reduces battery consumption.

In general, the Xiaomi Mi A3 can last perfectly for a day and a half or two days with an average use of 7 hours on the screen.

In another section, we find that the Xiaomi Mi A3 is capable of supporting a fast charge of 18W. The problem is that the charger that comes in the box is 10W. Using it, the new Xiaomi terminal has charged 50% of its battery in about 40 minutes, a charge that is completed in 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Our opinion on the Xiaomi Mi A3

Analysis of the Xiaomi Mi A3 – the Evolution of the Xiaomi Android One

Xiaomi has renewed its Android One with a lot of positive aspects and many other negatives that do not just convince everyone.

The Chinese company will revolutionize the market with the Xiaomi Mi A3, but we have the impression that it could have done even better. It is one of those mobiles that are always recommended but those that lack that point to become the best option in the market.

The Xiaomi Mi A3 arrives on the market with an attractive design that includes all the market trends: triple camera, glass back, water drop shaped notch, new logo …

A really attractive terminal that follows the lines of the Mi 9 and that completely changes aesthetics in relation to the previous models.

The Mi A3 is shown to the world with better performance than expected where Android One has a lot to do and really impressive cameras that have the odd aspect to correct.

The battery is another of the strengths of a smartphone that can withstand everything you throw without any problem and resistance to splashes that should not be overlooked.

Regarding the negative points, we point to the screen as the most prominent feature. Including an HD + screen in such a high range is a real mistake.

It is true that the integration of AMOLED technology increases battery saving and improves the quality of some aspects such as pure blacks or the color spectrum but, in our opinion, this section is not necessary to justify the lack of resolution of the screen.

It was as easy as following the dynamics of the Mi A2 and including the FullHD + resolution.

The fingerprint reader on screen is another aspect that we liked least. As with all brands, this technology is not yet fully developed and we continue to prefer the speed of conventional sensors.

At the performance level, and although we expected worse results, Xiaomi should also have opted for the Snapdragon 700 range to give that differential point to its terminal.

With all this, we do not mean that the Xiaomi Mi A3 is not a recommended mobile
